Chris Ashton- Vocals & Guitar Martyn Gribben– Guitar Andy Stuart- Bass Gary Gilmour- Drums
Your album ‘Anthem’ was released in September 2012, what was the inspiration behind the album?
Love mainly and obviously the serious side of the album is just inspired by the experiences through relationships with ex-partners or just in general the love life. All the songs on the album represent our sound well, so it seemed sensible to call it ‘Anthem’.
How did you come up with the name of the band?
Our Second song on the album ‘Gasoline’ used to be called ‘Fluorescent Hearts’ and we changed the name of the song to ‘Gasoline’ because it fit with the chorus’ well and we took the name.
What were you called before? Chris- We were called the ‘Really Terrible Music’ haha!
How did you guys met each other? Chris- Me and Gary, we went to School together, when we were like 12 we picked up our instruments, Gary started playing drums and I started playing guitar and we sat next to each other in class so we would always talk about music and we would just jam together. So we all played in bands before from when we were really young and then along the way, like when we went to college we met Andrew and then Martyn.
What’s your favourite song you have written?
Probably our new song “Guide you home” which will be out this August!
What makes you guys stand out? Chris- We don’t, we are very generic it’s not different from anything you’ve heard, there is nothing original about it and there is probably no reason for you to buy the music, but download it and if you can download it , download it for free because it’s not worth buying, haha!
I would say people who come to our shows, or like our music usually because it’s not stuck to one specific genre and I know a lot of bands say that, but we chose to put pop music in there with melodies and it’s technical as well, so it’s a good mixture.
How would you describe your sound then?
Chris- Like a huge chasm filled with sweets!
Gary- No…! We called the album ‘Anthem’ so it’s anthemic!
Martyn- Well it’s a nice blend of Pop and Rock music.
How do you feel about the fact that your music inspires so many people?
Chris- I think that’s one of the major driving forces behind wanting to take our music to other places, it is the fact that music can influence so many people and that’s what it did for me and I’m sure it also did for everyone else in the band. If we can inspire other people then that’s a major thing for us.
What do you have coming up that would excite your fans?
On top of our new single coming out this August “Guide you home”, we will be going out touring again. We will have a summer tour in July, so check us out on the road in the UK and after that… MORE TOURS!
You guys got signed to Ten Pound Records, how did this come about?
When we were together for about 6 months we met our manager Joe. We grew up where you needed a record label and we realized that no one would look at us unless we were big ourselves, with ought financial backing and support. So with our manager we started building a small industry around us and built a small record label where we looked more professional and could get the contact that we needed.
What are some of your favourite artists? Chris- Lana Del Rey, Chvrches
Gary- Bob Marley, Bring me the horizon, While she sleeps, Bleed from within, Mallory Knox
Martyn- John Mayer, Skrillex, Step, One Republic.
Andrew- Blink-182, Led Zeppelin. I think that’s what makes us unique as a band, the fact that we have such a wide range of influences.
So do you think you all take your influences and put it into Fluorescent Hearts?
Andrew- Yeah! We all bring something completely different to the band.
Chris- There's never one person that says ‘Oh that music is terrible!’ We all appreciate heavy and quite soft music and that makes this band sound like Fluorescent Hearts.
FH has just played the Music Matters Live festival in Singapore and the MIDI Festival in Hong Kong. Their new single “Guide you home” will be out this August. Latest Album ‘Anthem’ is available for purchase from ITUNES or as a hard copy from their website www.FluorescentHearts.com
