Brighton’s latest up and coming British pop rock infused band The Last Carnival have just embarked on an ever-growing journey to success. The Last Carnival would be best described as a fun, energetic, Jaw-dropping and hip-swaying 5-piece lineup of Russell James Williams (Song writer, Vocals, Guitar), Adam Williams (Drums), Michael John Marchant (Bass, Vocals), Kieran Lewis (Keyboard) and Justin Morris (Lead guitar). We caught up with this bunch in London, on their own headlining UK and Ireland tour.
When asked what makes the band unique or different, front-man Russell explained, “I believe that all bands are unique and we just push what we think we are as hard as we can and that is either going to make us stand out or not. And I think that’s the same for every band.”
On top of all the commotion this band is an extremely hard working group of individuals, getting to where they are now and with their constant touring it’s really paying off “We all work in a complete determined manner” Says Russell, “ We put everything into this band and it’s an amazing feeling seeing or knowing that people enjoy what we have put so much life into. The contribution bit is the greatest thing, that is really why we do this and we hope that our music does make people happy. It’s too much hassle to do it for anything else really!” “You wouldn’t really do it if no one cared and ignored you.” Adds Lead guitarist Justin.
Going back to the beginning Russell explained to us how the band came up with their name ‘The Last Carnival’.
“We wanted to create a band name that just explored how energetic we are live. The actual name was ‘Carnival’ for a while and then that was really boring and it only lasted for a couple of days, so we stuck ‘The Last’ in front of it, just to give it some weight. To make it more like Stephen King, just a bit darker. It could mean something or not, that’s kind of the concept, and as we grew live and the songs grew when we were coming towards making our first record, the name grew to suit the music. Take from it what you want!”
A wise choice but lets hope the guys won’t get bored of this name either!
When was the last time you’ve been to a carnival then?
Russell- “Ooo! Years probably! I wouldn’t even know.”
Justin- “Although we did do a show near a rollercoaster park in Glasgow.”
Russell- “So we kind of went on the rides…”
Justin- “…From a distance!”
At no point have these young lads been wasting time. “Falling for Luisa” E.P. was released only on the 10th September 2012 and the band are already soon to release a new single ‘Cadillac’ followed by a debut album released later this year recorded with renowned London engineer Jay Reynolds and mastered by Pete Maher (U2/The Killers/Snow Patrol). No they definitely have not been wasting their time, in fact they are a band on a mission- World domination- they don’t ask for much!
Although The Last Carnival probably had many great moments throughout their careers, Russell highlights to us some of the best, “I think some of the gigs we’ve played have been awesome! Probably the best part is actually going on the road in the UK and Ireland tours and every time we go out there’s more and more people coming to see us play. We’ve sold out places in Brighton and every time we go down there we are completely packing those venues out! We’ve almost finished the first record- that will be massive!”
So why might you ask, should I bother listening to this band or going to their shows?
If your not boring or just extremely old, and love to have fun, then this is the right band for you! Their shows will leave you sweating, tired from all the dancing, your ears ringing afterwards, but wanting more! This band makes seeing real rock n’ roll bands worth it and a real treat. Simple! So why not go and join their ever-growing ‘Carnie-army’ and become part of something real special.
